Fashion Style Terms
Vintage: Vintage fashion is normally a fashion that is at least 20 to 30 years old. Most people associate it with Victorian or even more recent eras of the 1920s-1940s. There is a sub ter called RETRO which is normally in reference to the 1950s, 1960s, and the 1970s.
Bohemian: Sometimes referred to as a Hippie or Gypsy the Bohemian (also BoHo or BoHo Chic) applies a free spirit style. Normally this consists of items that have a lot of flow and movement along with bring colors and interesting old patterns such as tie dye, paisley, or floral. Arty: The artsy style embraces the creative thinker aspect of fashion. Normally seem with a chic hat or camera in hand artsy takes unconventional pieces and makes them unique.
Chic (on trend): Chic is basically another term for Trendy or Fashionable. This is in reference to fashion that is the current trend. As a model it is vital to stay on top of the current trends and note IMVU trends are not always in swing with real life trends. Classic: The best way to remember what a Classic Style is is basically to remember it is all about comfort and something that is unforgettable. This can be the classic jeans and a t-shirt or something that is a bit more casual in style. It can also be the perfect little black dress. Just remember it is something that people remember wearing and felt comfort in. Minimalist: This is a new style on trend now that has recently come into play. It is basically creating a fashionable style that has a little pieces as possible. It is not overdone and though it is a simple style it has high fashion impact.
Avant Garde: Is experimental and innovative fashion. It is basically fashion with no limits and can be wild and crazy yet still look put together. Avant Garde is fashion meet art at its best and it pushes the boundaries of what people think as fashion. Haute Couture: Haute Couture can fall into the same category as high fashion. It is fresh off the runway looks that look expensive and have a refined elegance to them. Haute Couture can sometimes also fall into the Avant Garde as it takes high quality and detailed take on fashion. Exotic: Think worldly! Exotic fashion takes bits and pieces of styles from around the world and turns it into something that is intriguing. From tropical prints, to India inspired dresses or even African influences Exotic Fashion takes you on a worldly jet setter style that includes detailed fabric/textures and accessories.
Flamboyant: Flamboyant s a style that is both dramatic and energetic/outgoing. It is often very flashy, asymmetrical, fringe, and multicolored.At most times, flamboyant fashion style can have outlandish prints or intense bright colors. Andro (Androgynous): Andro is a style that is gaining popularity. It is basically a style that is heavily based on Unisex. The idea is whatever the female is wear can be also worn by a male and it also goes vise versa where in male would wear something that may appear to be able to be worn by a female. The idea is you can not tell if it is a male or female outfit. Think David Bowie. Glamorous (Elegant/Formal): Everyone's favorite fashion trend this takes formal looks and amps them up a notch. They are elegant and sophistic looks that is often worn on the red carpet. They can be simplistic in design with beautiful jewelry or they can lean towards Haute Couture and High Fashion.
Urban (Street): This fashion as a lot of people say comes from the streets. Its that rugged city fashion that normally consists of baggy or loose clothes, Hip Hop influences as well as Latin inner city style. Romantic: Soft, girly, Tiff. lol She is the best definition sometimes of a Romantic Style. It is sweet and cute, normally some type of denim or soft dress, pastel colors that give you that hopeless in love innocents. Preppy (Nerdy/Geeky): This style is popular among the younger college generation that consists of mix and match clothing and sometimes has a vintage flair. Normally short flared skirts, sweaters with blouses underneath, and of course, glasses!
Punk/Emo/Rocker: These genes can hold there own category but also be grouped together. All have some key elements and that is that rebel aspect. Leather, dark denim, black are all staples that run throughout all 3 of the genes as well as black combat boots. Goth: Goth in itself has many sub genres but the classic goth can go vintage inspired Victorian fashion that is typically black, with pale skin and dark make up features. Or it could also go to the more modern style that takes a lot of influences from Punk, Emo and Scene. I would recommend researching the different sub-genres of goth! Steampunk: Steampunk is a fantasy type fashion that takes both vintage Victorian, western, and sci-fi elements and puts it together into one sci-fi style clothing. Normally steampunk holds a lot of browns and rust tones as well as goggles, monocles and gears.
